I was supposed to be working on my year-end administrative stuff but the creative urge was too strong this week. As soon as I recognized that there was a new body of work trying to get out of my head (and I wasn't just trying to avoid doing spreadsheets) I rearranged my calendar to cram in a couple of extra studio days this week. The image above is one from this new series...which I'm grateful I took a leap of faith to create this week. I jammed to some of my favorite tunes and let my mind and my hands connect. It was painful, and joyful...hard work but worth it...and when I finished, I was lit up but exhausted.
I feel like this series is symbolic of what 2021 has been like for me. It's been a blur of activity full of happy accidents and thankfully only a few minor messes. The only predictability I had all year was that nothing was predictable. As an artist I embrace constant change, but documenting it can be tough. I've told a lot of those stories this year in a variety of media.
Here's update on the big ones, as the year comes to a close: My crew and I have made quite a bit of progress on our new documentary film, "Out of Reach: The Struggle for the American Dream." I'm also finishing up a soon-to-be-revealed series of mixed-media artworks about homelessness. The works are part of an artist residency I'm doing with Favela Miami, a nonprofit organization that serves Miami Beach's homeless population. I'm also grateful to have had some of my artwork accepted into juried exhibitions this year. The latest one, EXTINCTION: Save the Planet- 2021, will be opening online in just a few short days! And last but not least, this month I dropped a collection of 87 NFTs on stxnft.com...original art that features my favorite face in the world...Augie Kohler! I'm happy to report that some of this collection has already sold, and I'm excited to see where this new venture will take me!
I am looking forward to 2022 as I continue my artistic journey. I'm hoping we'll have our documentary finished (you can view the trailer and follow our progress on our social media sites, "outofreachfilm"). I can't wait to share my work from this artist residency with Favela (how's that for a teaser?) and any other adventures I find myself part of as the new year rolls in. I wish everyone peace and joy and a Happy New Year, and I hope you all take some time for reflection. What are you grateful for this year? What have you learned? What do you want out of 2022? Until next time...live in color!
